Position Statement

Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled work and other tasks in the operation and maintenance of grounds at Shabbona Lake State Park; performs carpentry work; operates heavy equipment and serves as lead worker over seasonal workers; participates in the maintenance and operation of Shabbona Lake State Park and all satellite areas. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Builds forms and pours concrete; constructs various concrete products such as buoy anchors, boat anchors, sign posts, etc.; performs routine repairs to drinking fountains, buildings and plumbing; installs new lights, switches and receptacles; repairs roofs to picnic shelters, pit toilets and maintenance buildings; performs carpentry work for building repairs, bridge construction, table construction, etc.; constructs, installs and maintains site informational signs; installs and maintains wood duck and blue bird houses; installs and maintains goose nesting sites.
  2. Operates boat used for general lake maintenance such as buoy placement, floating dock repairs, spillway maintenance, etc.; operates truck and tractors for grounds maintenance; operates truck for the collection of garbage; operates 55 hp. tractor for mowing; loads and unloads supplies; operates 3-ton truck for plowing snow, hauling gravel and other materials; operates vehicles with air brakes with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds to haul equipment. 
  3. Operates heavy equipment such as tree spade, stump cutter and chipper; provides routine maintenance of heavy equipment including fluids, grease, hydraulic hose repair, etc.; operates grain drill to plant prairie restoration; assists with prairie restoration plots including maintenance burns and weed control.
  4. Cleans and disinfects restrooms and shower buildings; applies pesticides for the eradication of weeds; plants trees, shrubs, flowers and grass; sweeps, mops, waxes and polishes floors; paints picnic tables and grills. 
  5. Repairs roads; applies patch using bituminous materials; performs extensive shoulder repairs with gravel to correct ruts.
  6. Performs assigned security duties in campground and day-use areas; completes daily security reports; inspects picnic areas, campground, buildings, grounds and trails for hazards such as flooding, fallen trees, erosion, broken tables and broken playground equipment; assists in rescue of injured, lost or stranded visitors; performs first aid and CPR; contacts proper authorities if needed. 
  7. Sells camping permits; collects fees; operates check station; registers hunters; directs traffic and informs visitors of the site rules and regulations; assists with goose trapping and banding.
  8. On a seasonal or intermittent basis, provides guidance and training to seasonal employees and volunteers.
  9. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires two (2) year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of equipment and tools used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment, farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
  • Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds. 

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Employment Conditions

  • Requires possession of a Class A CDL with Air Brakes designation.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a pesticide applicator/operators license.
  • Ability to perform First Aid and CPR and maintain certifications in such.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Work Hours:  May-Oct: Wed-Thurs 8a-4p, Fri-Sat 10a-6p, Sun 8a-4p (Mon-Tues off); Nov.-Dec.:  Wed.-Sun 8a-4p (Mon-Tues off); Jan-Apr.: Tues-Sat 8a-4p (Sun-Mon off).  All shifts include a 1/2 hr. lunch period.
