Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Carpenter for the Region 1 Hot Shot Crew. Under direction of the Construction Supervisor, this position will perform skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state park buildings and newly constructed buildings, complete work orders and requests for expenditures, follow safety precautions and procedures while operating saws, planers, jointers, mortising machines, sanders, drill presses and lathes for upcoming projects. Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, of the Construction Supervisor, performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state park buildings and newly constructed buildings, floors, trusses, doors, windows, and signs.
  • Performs skilled carpentry work in reconstructing wooden structures, located on state parks, furniture, tools, fences, and other wooden articles.
  • Follows appropriate safety precautions and procedures in the use and handling of tools and equipment at work sites.
  • Develops or utilizes plans in the making of cabinetry work.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of extensive knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and standards of the trade.
  • One (1) year of experience in the use of tools and machines of the trade.
  • One (1) year of experience instructing beginners in the trade.
  • One (1) year of experience directing unskilled workers.
  • One (1) year of experience estimating materials.
  • One (1) year of experience reading and working from plans, drawings, or sketches.
