Position Statement

Under direct supervision, participates in the maintenance and operation of the Hennepin Canal Parkway and its satellites (Mautino SF&WA, Andalusia Waterfowl Area, Bradford Pheasant Area and Elton Fawks Eagle Refuge) by carrying out semi-skilled work in the maintenance of site buildings, furniture, fixtures, equipment, and grounds and/or regularly operates equipment associated with facility operations; assists in turf maintenance in the areas of mowing, weed eating, etc. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Operates trucks, tractors, and other equipment, i.e. riding mowers, bush hogs, batwing and articulating mowers, weedeaters, chainsaws, and other motorized and non-motorized hand tools to maintain area facilities, including mowing of grass, cutting brush and trees, planting trees, applying herbicides and/or pesticides, picking up garbage, trail maintenance, and repairs, fence building, and other improvement projects to grounds, trails, waterways, structures, wildlife habitat facilities and use areas.
  2. Operates large or specialized equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, end loaders, tree spades, road graders, brush chippers, sprayers, and large trucks for site maintenance and construction projects, wildlife habitat and farming programs, road repairs, hauling and delivering supplies. Operates 10 ton, 2 ton and/or 1 ton trucks with air brakes with trailers with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds to haul equipment; shovels and plows snow. Makes signs. Operates boats, motors and pumps; performs semi-skilled work associated with the building trades to include concrete, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and air conditioning.
  3. Patrols and inspects areas for safety hazards such as flooding, fallen trees, erosion, leaks in banks, blocked drainage systems, etc.; assures buildings and gates are secure, informs visitors of rules and regulations, assists visitors, assists in the operation of check stations; contacts proper authorities in the case of emergencies; verifies locks and aqueducts are properly functioning.
  4. Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment to include washing, waxing, changing oil, fluids, filters, spark plugs, and belts; as expertise dictates, may work on carburetors, engines, braked. and hydraulic systems, etc.
  5. Cleans restrooms and buildings; sweeps and mops floors; washes windows.
  6. On an intermittent or seasonal basis, provides leadership and direction to volunteers, conservation workers and other staff; provides on-the-job training to new employees and volunteers to familiarize them with facilities, operations, tools, equipment, etc.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery;
  • Requires possession of a valid Class A Illinois Commercial Driver's License with air brakes designation;
  • Requires working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing; 
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities programs, rules, and regulations;
  • Requires ability follow written and oral instructions;
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings, and grounds;
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds;
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis;
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Requires ability ot obtain a herbicide/pesticide operator's license.
