Position Descripton and Responsibilities

Under general supervision, instructs and supervises Correctional Sergeants, Correctional Officers, and Correctional Officer Trainees; enforces and maintains discipline, safety, security, maintenance, sanitary and custodial measures for the control of offenders; monitors compliance with Departmental Rules, Administrative Directive and Institutional Policies.

 

35%     Supervises staff.

20%     Makes daily inspections of all buildings and dorms in his/her assigned area or zone.

10%     Arbitrates offenders disputes.

10%     Establishes and maintains complete training records on all security personnel.

10%     Complies with key and lock control and tool control procedures in his/her assigned area or zone by reporting broken, lost, or malfunctioning keys, tools and equipment.

05%     Prepares, submits and reviews a variety of reports for accuracy and completeness.

05%     Monitors compliance with all administrative directives and institutional directions when operating a vehicle to transport offenders on writs, furloughs and transfers.

05%     Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school and completion of an approved Correctional Officer Training Program.
  2. Requires two years experience as a Correctional Officer in a penal or security institution.
  3. Requires thorough knowledge of institutional rules, regulations and requirements for the control of offenders.
  4. Requires working knowledge of individual and group attitude and behavior of offenders in the penal or correctional institutions.
  5. Requires working knowledge of methods and techniques used in discipline of employees and persons in correctional institutions.
  6. Requires working knowledge of practices and procedures in prison administration.
  7. Requires ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with public officials, investigatory and law enforcement agencies.
  8. Requires ability to supervise Correctional Officers and make independent decisions.
  9. Requires ability to prepare reports of unusual happenings, accidents, or  violations of rules.
  10. Requires ability to train and supervise employees or offenders.
  11. Requires ability to understudy and to assume duties of immediate supervisor in the event of vacation, sick leave or emergency.
  12. Requires the ability to think clearly and exercises forceful initiative in emergency situations.
  13. Requires the physical ability to perform assigned duties.
  14. Requires ability to enforce discipline, safety, sanitation, security and custodial measures.
  15. Requires ability to understand the use firearms.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to pass the Illinois Department of Corrections background check.
  2. On Junuary 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois.  Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department's zero tolerance Drug Testing policy.  The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
