Position Overview - Building/Grounds Laborer
The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Building/Grounds Laborer located out of the Sparta Training Site and Armory. This position under immediate supervision, performs non-skilled tasks and manual building labor; strips, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors; washes windows; clean restrooms; shovels snow; empties trash. Maintains interior and exterior cleanliness and condition of various on-site locations. The Department of Military Affairs works with the members of the Illinois Air and Army National Guard. Essential Functions
- Maintains interior cleanliness of facility.
- Performs exterior maintenance of facility.
- Performs routine maintenance of facility.
- Cares and accounts for janitorial supplies and equipment.
- Loads and unloads trucks which requires the possession of appropriate valid driver's license when moving the trucks; sets up and takes down tables, chairs, etc.; moves office equipment; carries moderate to heavy items up to 80 lbs.
- Performs building security duties such as checking for leaks, fires, vagrants, and prowlers. Checks condition and security of facilities windows, doors, gates, and other controlled access points.
- Assists in the firing of a low-pressure boiler, cleaning flues, and keeping boiler room clean.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers elementary knowledge of grounds/building maintenance and building cleaning methods.
- Prefers common understanding and basic experience using elementary computer software.
- Prefers the ability to follow simple oral and written instructions, as well as instructions provided in graphical flow charts.
Employment Conditions
- Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.
- Requires travelling to other state facilities using state owned vehicle.
- Requires the ability to lift and carry 80 pounds, il e., heavy boxes, supplies, etc.; ability to move heavy furniture and equipment.
- Requires being on feet for long periods of time; the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
- Requires being on hands and knees for extended periods of time.
- Requires the ability to withstand extreme temperature changes.
- Requires exposure to a variety of chemical cleaning agents.
- Requires possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license.
