Position Statement

Under direct supervision, engages in semi-skilled activities in the care, maintenance and improvement of site grounds, structures, outdoor recreational and natural programs offered at Chain O'Lakes State Park. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Inspects public use areas and engages in public relations work throughout the park:
  • Monitors areas for fallen trees, erosion, damages to property
  • Sells camping permits and collects fees
  • Runs hunter check station
  • Directs incoming traffic in the park
  • Informs visitors of rules and regulations
  • Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors
  • Performs First Aid and CPR
  • Contacts proper authorities in the even of emergencies or disturbances
  • Inspects to assure buildings and gates are properly locked
  • Collect trash throughout the park

 

2.  Operates and maintains tractors and heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, tree spades, road graders, bushhog, auger, vibrating roller, riding mowers, stump cutters, and back blade:

  • Operates trucks for snow plowing, hauling, and road repairs.
  • Operates end loaders for trail renovation/construction projects, fire lane maintenance and road/trail repairs
  • Operates chain saws to fell and buck fallen trees
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs to vehicles and equipment by changing oil, fluids, spark plugs, and belts
  • Sharpens mower blades
  • Washes vehicles

 

3.  Performs routine semi-skilled maintenance and repairs to park projects:

  • Makes minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and masonry
  • Performs carpentry, painting, plumbing, roofing and electrical
  • Builds forms for concrete
  • Repairs and paints picnic tables and stoves/grills
  • Constructs, installs, and maintains signs and fences
  • Reports hazardous conditions and vandalism
  • Patches roads

 

4.  Performs landscaping such as mowing grass:

  • Cuts brush and prunes bushes/ trees using hand mowers, bushhog, aerial lifts, chippers, and chainsaws
  • Plants trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses
  • Uses weed whip
  • Rakes leaves
  • Applies pesticides and herbicides
  • Participates in controlled burns and maintains firefighting equipment
  • Plows and shovels snow

 

5.  Provides training and equipment safety to volunteers and conservation workers at the park:

  • Provides leadership and direction to volunteers, conservation workers and other site staff
  • Provides on the job training of facilities, programs, tools, and equipment used

 

6.  Performs general maintenance of office buildings:

  • Cleans shop
  • Sweeps, mops, waxes, and polishes floors
  • Dusts and cleans furniture
  • Washes windows
  • Cleans and disinfects shower buildings and pit toilets

 

7.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires two (2) year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of equipment and tools used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment, farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Requires ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds. 

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Employment Conditions

  • Requires possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Ability to obtain a pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to become First Aid/CPR certified within 6 months of employment.
