Position Overview

Under direct supervision, engages in the care, maintenance and improvement of site grounds, structures, outdoor recreational and natural programs offered at Chain O'Lakes State Park.

Job Responsibilities

1.    Under direct supervision, performs routine maintenance and program support tasks:

  • Mows site grounds and clears vegetation utilizing tractors, bush hogs, sickle bar mowers, riding and push mowers, chain saw and weed eater:
  • Operates air-driven and electrical power tools
  • Assists in other grounds maintenance such as mowing, weed eating, etc .
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides around posts, parking areas, buildings

 

2.    Operates heavy equipment:

  • Operates tractors and equipment such as vibrating roller, riding mowers, stump cutters and back blade
  • Operates garbage compactor for garbage collection
  • Operates trucks for sow plowing, hauling and road repairs
  • Operates vehicles with a total GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds with Air Brakes .

 

3.    Informs visitors of site rules and regulations:

  • Sells camping permits
  • Runs hunter check stations
  • Directs traffic
  • Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors
  • Performs First Aid and CPR
  • Inspects to assure buildings and gates are properly locked

 

4.    Performs routine maintenance on 20,000 square foot building;

  • Mops, waxes and buffs floors
  • Performs general maintenance on building
  • Cleans shop
  • Cleans and disinfects shower buildings and pit toilets
  • Perform maintenance and repairs of stable

 

5.    Performs routine maintenance and repairs associated with the building trades:

  • Completes plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, painting
  • Builds and maintains signs and fences
  • Reports and repairs hazardous conditions and vandalism found while conducting routine maintenance
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs to site vehicles and equipment

 

6.    On an intermittent or seasonal basis, provides leadership and direction to seasonal employees, volunteers and other staff:

  • Provides on the job training to new employees and volunteers to familiarize them with site facilities, programs, tools, and equipment.

 

7.    Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably with the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
  2. Requires two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  2. Two (2) years of experience in the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  3. One (1) year of experience in the ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
  4. One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
  5. One (1) year of experience in grounds-keeping.

 

Employment Conditions

  1. Ability to pass background check.
  2. A valid and current Class A Commercial Driver's license with airbrakes designation.
  3. Ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment.
  4. Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
  5. Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
  6. Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
  7. Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

The Office of Land Management (OLM) oversees nearly 400 individual parcels of land and institutes a wide variety of programs and activities advocating outdoor recreation through sustainable use, conservation, and preservation.  The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials.  OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
