 We invite qualified applicants to apply for the position which serves as an Accountant Advanced in the Accounting Division at State Retirement Systems (SRS).  This position is responsible for the calculation, entry, and collection of overpaid pension, survivor, disability, and lump sum benefits issued by SRS.  The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, detail oriented, have excellent analytic, communication (both verbal and in writing), and organizational skills.  SRS is conveniently located on the west side of Springfield with free parking on-site.

Essential Functions

  • Independently performs complex accounting and auditing work in calculating and reconciling financial reporting of benefit payment vouchers applicable to overpayments. Inputs the overpayments into the Accounting Receivable database and creates a benefit overpayment record.

  • Reviews overpayment audits and reconciliations in addition to completing autonomous audits. The audits and reconciliations include: 1) Comparing the amount paid to the revision of the new benefit amount (given statutory guidelines, death or ineligibility of benefit) and 2) Determining the accuracy and eligibility of benefits paid vs. benefits payable by the Illinois Pension Code.

  • Verifies overpayment records and calculations.  This includes: 1) Overpayment entry into the accounts receivable database; 2) Benefit reversal deductions; 3) ARCP overpayments; 4) Transfer of data from the receivable system into the Overpayment Tracking System; 5) Additional overpayment data for follow-up collection activity.
    Overpayment follow-up is inclusive of: Entry into the Comptrollers’ IDROP (involuntary withholding) System, creating involuntary withholdings, review and preparation of overpayment notification correspondence, and tracking the payments against the Accounts Receivable (overpayments).

  • Completes detailed and summary level reporting generated from a variety of complex accounting systems and subsidiary ledgers, including but not limited to the Active Member Database and the Accounts Receivable ledger.

  • Responds to inquiries related to overpayment accounts and provides clarification to members and SRS staff regarding overpayment calculations.

  • Aids Accounting Division staff with payroll transaction reviews, online member inquiry reviews and service purchase cases.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years college with courses in business administration and accounting.
  • Requires two years of professional experience in accounting, external auditing, budgetary planning and control or public accounting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers ability to evaluate difficult accounting problems and analyze and interpret accounting records and reports and to apply established accounting methods and techniques.
  • Prefers knowledge of the Illinois Pension Code, 40 ILCS 5/14 relating to benefit eligibility for State Retirement Systems.
  • Prefers ability to perform detailed work involving written or numerical data and to make arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately, resolving discrepancies when needed.
  • Prefers ability to communicate  effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Requires the ability to work outside of normal hours to meet deadlines.

  • Requires the ability to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, short notice, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
