Position Overview

The Department of Agriculture is seeking a Agricultural Marketing Reporter in the Bureau of Marketing, Promotions and Grants.  This position plas a key role in gathering and disseminating important market information to our agricultural partners including farmers, merchandisers and agricultural businesses.  The mission of the bureau is to expand Illinois domestic and international markets by providing marketing assistance to food and agricultural companies.  The bureau also provides essential price and sale information of the grain & livestock markets to assist in the marketing and distribution of farm commodities. Job Responsibilities

  1. Contacts merchandisers in the respective market areas serveral times daily to receive marketing data including, but not limited to price, demand, growing, marketing, and harvesting conditions etc. 
  2. Obtains prices, grades, and trends by communicating with packers and producers throughout the state on a daily basis. 
  3. Under general direction, collects, compiles, and disseminates the daily and weekly Illinois grain/livestock market report as well as the hay market report.
  4. Disseminates reports through various forms of media including the USDA, radio broadcasts and an automated attendant. 
  5. Assists with the check-off programs enacted through legislation; during referendums, makes sure all eligible votes have ballots; tabulates voting results.
  6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college with coursework in marketing, economics or agriculture.
  2. Requires eighteen months of professional experience in the marketing and/or reporting of agricultural products, e.g., as an Agricultural Market News Assistant.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Requires thorough knowledge and understanding of market reporting terminology.
  2. Requires extensive knowledge and familiarity with trade practices and marketing and distribution channels for farm products.
  3. Requires extensive knowledge of the production and marketing characteristics and problems of agricultural commodities and factors which create price fluctuations and price advantages.
  4. Requires ability to collect, coordinate, analyze and communicate market news information.
  5. Requires ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals, groups, and agricultural businesses.
  6. Requires ability to express market information clearly and concisely, in oral and written form.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to be on travel status when directed.
  2. Requires the ability to pass a background check.
