Agency Marketing Statement

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is tasked with the oversight of communities within Illinois to achieve and maintain optimal health and safety.  With an annual budget of over $600 million in state and federal funds, 7 regional offices, 3 laboratories and over 1,100 employees, IDPH is equipped to fulfill its mission of protecting the health and wellness of the people of Illinois through the prevention, health promotion, regulation and control of disease and injury.

Position Overview

Under general direction of the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Section Chief, oversees the technical and administrative functions of the Section in the absence of the Section Chief. Plans, directs, and supervises a statewide program for the control and prevention of STIs; collaborates with the STI Section Chief in the development of epidemiological data reports, quality assurance data reports, planning and budget documents involving the Sexually Transmitted Infections Section. Serves as working supervisor.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Oversees the technical and administrative functions of the Section in the absence of the Section Chief.
  2. Coordinates the administration of the program’s budget.
  3. Provides and generates (either directly or through use of staff) epidemiological data and medical (through application of structured policies and guidelines) consultation to private physicians, local health departments, hospitals and school nurses and suspected or diagnosed individuals with sexually transmitted infections.
  4. Coordinates the technical aspects of the data collection activities of professional STI staff who conduct epidemiologic investigations of these diseases and assists local health departments in such investigations.
  5. Oversees training activities.
  6. Serves as working supervisor.
  7. Maintains liaison with the U.S. Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Epidemiologist of other states in relation to sexually transmitted infection control activities significant to the IDPH. 
  8. Coordinates the review and revision of the Department’s Rules and Regulations for the control of sexually transmitted infections to be distributed to health offices.
  9. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in public health, biology, zoology, bacteriology and statistics.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to three years of administrative experience in a state or local STI/HIV program and extensive experience in developing, implementing and interpreting programmatic and department policies and procedures.
  • Prefers working knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite products and CDC STI case and data management systems.

Conditions of Employment

Requires the ability to travel and a valid driver’s license.
