Job Summary

Under direction of the Accounting Manager, Accountant performs various accounting duties relating to the collection and disbursement of TRS funds, operating budget, and reporting.

Essential Functions

  • Monitor budget expenditures including processing budget adjustments throughout the fiscal year in Dynamics 365. Provide training and assistance to new users in D365.Assist in the preparation of the TRS budget including compiling and distributing data to managers, entering, and revising budget requests, preparing documents for the Board of Trustees, and distributing final budget documents. Assist in monitoring the budget throughout the fiscal year.
  • Process employee payroll with proper documentation, verify changes and reconcile output. Process pay period reporting to TRS.
  • Process budget adjustments and Requests for Expenditure Approvals.
  • Prepare bi-monthly payroll analysis.
  • Review quarterly variance analysis related to the TRS budget and expenditure reports as a secondary reviewer for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepares Investment-related expenditure surveys and studies upon request from Investment Accounting.
  • Serves as backup for processing contract obligation documents to the Office of the Comptroller.
  • Monitor contract expenditures verifying adherence to expenditure limits and terms.
  • Review travel vouchers for accuracy and compliance
  • Assist with Financial Reporting when necessary or required.
  • Supply information for FOIA’s, surveys, analysis, and special requests utilizing spreadsheets and databases.
  • Assist with Annual Report Differences and ATE disbursements.
  • Assist Accounting Manager with Administrative and Investment CEM surveys.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Essential Functions (Continued)

  • Serve as backup for all accounting functions
  • Annually, prepare files for microfilming or disposal in accordance with the Office of the Secretary of State’s retention schedule.
  • Compose and revise job procedures as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of professional accounting principles, methods and procedures including an understanding of internal accounting operations. Ability to analyze and interpret financial data
  • High degree of arithmetic skill and expert level of Excel skill
  • Ability to interpret statutes governing the Teachers' Retirement System and its administrative travel and expenditure management policies and procedures, as well as regulations from the Office of the Comptroller to ensure compliance with the Statewide Accounting Management System   (SAMS)
  • Ability to be proactive in detecting and correcting discrepancies, errors, and inconsistencies. Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner both verbally and through written correspondence
