Position Overview

This position is accountable for directing the timely design and preparation of policies and standards such as the Bridge Manual, Culvert Manual, All Bridge Designer (ABD) memorandum, base sheets, special provisions, and design guides. Additionally, this position oversees product evaluations and development of Prequalified Structural Systems (PQSS), provides details and policies for the Manual for Fabrication of Precast Prestressed Concrete Products. This position reviews remedies for damaged precast prestressed concrete products, communicates with fabricators, producers, and industry agencies, and provides cost evaluations and time and quantity estimates.

Essential Functions

  • Manages a staff responsible for the preparation of bridge and structure standards to ensure structural adequacy and completeness.
  • Ensures structural analysis, review, and development of standards for special structures for highway appurtenances, precast culverts, sound walls, and precast prestressed concrete beams.
  • Directs the analysis and review of contractor proposals related to shoring, bracing, or temporary structures and recommends approval/disapproval.
  • Directs the maintenance and update of the Bridge Manual and Culvert Manual.
  • Develops, trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Illinois Structural Engineering License.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Supervisory experience.
