POSITION SUMMARY

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services is seeking to hire an organized, self motivated, and detailed-oriented Building & Grounds Laborer in the Springfield, Illinois area. Responsibilities include performing non-skilled routine cleaning of interior and exterior of buildings such as snow, leaf, ice, and debris of walkways, entrances, and exits. Additional duties include operating of heavy equipment such as tractors, end loaders, lawn trimmers, dollies, spreaders, desk jacks, and other equipment. All are encouraged to apply! 

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Under immediate supervision of the Building & Grounds Supervisor, performs exterior maintenance of facilities.
  • Performs nonskilled routine cleaning tasks and interior/exterior maintenance functions within the Central & Southern Region.
  • Loads and unloads trucks containing facility office furniture, various materials, and equipment.
  • Operates heavy equipment including tractors lacking backhoe, end loader, lawn trimmers, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment such as blowers and plows, hedge clippers, pallet jacks, dollies, spreaders, tillers, desk jacks, and leaf blowers. 
  • Travels to other facilities in the Central and Southern Region to maintain the buildings and grounds of those facilities on a regular basis.
  • Coordinates with skilled craftsmen in the maintenance of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of those duties enumerated above.    

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefers working knowledge of the use and care of janitorial cleaning equipment.
  • Prefers working knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., tractor lawn mower, string trimmer, shovel) use and maintenance.
  • Prefers working knowledge of grounds/building maintenance and cleaning methods.
  • Prefers one (1) year of professional experience following oral and written instructions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Requires completion of an Illinois State Police (ISP) fingerprint background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in an ‘on call’ capacity during inclement weather to remove and/or plow snow.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to other facilities.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry materials/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and assist with lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Requires ability to utilize agency supplied material/equipment (i.e., smartphone, mobile phone, etc.) to respond to emergency calls.
