Agency Statement

Charged with preserving, protecting and promoting Illinois’ natural resources, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) employees oversee water, wildlife, wetlands and oil wells, parks, historic sites – and everything in between. Job Responsibilities

Under immediate supervision of the Engineering Studies Section Manager, performs moderately difficult technical and skilled manual work; assists in basic engineering functions, collects data required for completion of assigned projects and inspects construction projects on a state-wide basis.

  1.  (40%)       Performs moderately difficult technical and skilled manual work; Assists in basic engineering computations, report writing, and responses to public inquiries required in support of project tasks such as determining: flood hydrographs, water surface profiles, economic benefits and costs, parameter and quantity estimation and compliance with state standards and policies.
  2. (30%)       Become familiar with computer programs to compute such items as: channel discharges, river stages, watershed runoff, estimates of volumes and areas, and estimates of cuts and fills.  Reviews results of engineering computations and the accuracy of collected data to assure technical adequacy, compliance with rules and regulations, and presents results to supervising engineer for review and approval.
  3. (20%)       Collects basic data from field and office sources required for engineering applicaitons.  Travels throughout the state.
  4. (  5%)       Develops working relations with OWR employees, and other Departmental and non-Departmental contacts; complies with all Departmental safety rules, practices and policies and helps to ensure safety compliance by other co-workers.
  5. (  5%)       Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires a four year degree from an accredited college in engineering, or knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college in engineering;
  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering (Soil and Water Option), or equivalent is preferred.
  • Requires possession of a certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT), or must be qualified to receive the EIT certification.
  • This position requires a valid Illinois driver's license.

Employment Conditions

  • Requires possession of a valid appropriate driver's license and the ability to travel.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering (Soil and Water Option), or equivalent is preferred.
  • Requires possession of a certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT), or must be qualified to receive the EIT certification.
