Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs professional laboratory technologist duties in Food and Waterborne disease outbreak testing and potential bioterrorism agents; conducts and interprets diagnostic testing procedures using automated and semi-automated laboratory instruments for clinical specimens and environmental samples.

 

  1. Performs analytical testing on clinical specimens for Food and Waterborne disease outbreak testing and potential bioterrorism agents and blood lead, reports results; interprets results and assists in compiling data for IDPH programs, with strict adherence to written, approved procedures; using sophisticated equipment or manual procedures; differentiates initial findings using confirmatory test procedures where screening test results do not yield a clear diagnostic.
  2. Performs experiments on specimens in order to detect the presence of organisms or conditions using fully automated, complex analyzers; assures proper data management of patient results and notification of providers of crucial value results as appropriate; adheres to laboratory quality control polices; performs and documents routine preventative maintenance/quality control testing on testing apparatus used.
  3. Provides assistance to other units; prepares samples/specimens for testing; performs tests following appropriate laboratory procedures; analyzes results; prepares reports of findings; performs preventive maintenance on testing equipment.
  4. Identifies methods and prepares clinical and environmental specimens for appropriate testing; prepares special stains, solutions, reagents, and media; with precision and accuracy, records test results and reports abnormal results; calculates and compiles statistical data on a daily basis; performs and documents daily quality control procedures; assists in maintaining inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies; calibrates equipment as needed and maintains records of reagents used. 
  5. Performs and documents participation in the proficiency testing program; assists the supervisor in the training of other personnel as appropriate; maintains and updates necessary documentation. Assists with research on an investigational basis of new technologies and procedures under consideration for laboratory implementation.
  6. Handles, sterilizes and disposes of infectious waste in accordance with the approved guidelines and procedures. 

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in medical technology from a recognized college or university; or a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university in one of the chemical, biological, or physical sciences, supplemented by one year’s professional clinical laboratory experience.
  • Requires working knowledge or methods and techniques of clinical laboratory analysis, working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of microscopes, analytical balance and centrifuges. 
  • Ability to apply sterile techniques, maintain accurate records; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
