The Illinois Office of the Comptroller is seeking applicants for the position of Computer Operations Specialist - Night Shift.

 

The Comptroller is the chief fiscal control officer for the Illinois government, charged by the Constitution with maintaining the state’s central fiscal accounts and ordering payments into and out of the appropriate funds. The office processes more than 16 million transactions annually and serves as a “fiscal watchdog” to ensure that all state payments meet the requirements of the law. The Comptroller’s office provides meaningful and timely fiscal information to help state policymakers adopt effective policies. The office continually seeks new ways to improve how it serves the public. The Comptroller has updated and streamlined the Comptroller’s website and has led the process of updating the state’s payroll and accounting systems. Comptroller Mendoza is committed to running the Office of Comptroller as a financial watchdog for the interest of Illinois citizens and to installing the most modern and transparent systems to make the state’s financial information available to all. 

Major Function

Under general supervision of the Public Service Administrator, the incumbent performs a variety of complex technical functions related to the control and operation of a computer console and peripheral equipment. The Computer Operations Specialsit on night shift operates production printers, completes quality control and balance of warrant output, and maintains warrant stock; verifies validity and accuracy of input/output data; assists other operators in resolving computer and data errors, provides assistance to mainframe users on the use of mainframe software.

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitors mainframe system console and responds to system generated messages pertaining to cartridge/tape mounts, hardware malfuntions and form changes
    • Monitors CICS regions and DB2 and resonds to messages
    • Checks system generated reports and prepares for distribution
    • Sets up and initiates programs restarts
    • Performs minor JCL changes to correct aborts
    • Monitors ZEKE scheduling system and contacts proper support when issues arise

 

  • Operates Xerox Nuvera 144 MX laser printer, evaluating errors and setting up restarts
    • Scans reports to ensure accuracy and quality
    • Notifies appropriate personnel concerning errors and hardware problems
    • Operate production printers, complete quality control and balance or warrant output and maintain warrant stock

 

  • Assists in monitoring, guiding, and training other operators depending upon system expertise
    • Provides input for improving operating techniques and procedures

 

  • Analyzes current operating procedures and standards for ways to improve efficiency

 

  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties defined above 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school diploma with course work in the computer science field, supplemented by four (4) years of experience in control and operation of mainframe computer system.

       OR

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college including course work in the computer science field supplemented by two (2) years of experience in control and operation of mainframe computer system.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of office procedures, methods, practices and application.
  • Requires ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Requires ablity to follow and understand complex written and oral instructions.
  • Requires ability to develop satisfactory working relationships with employees and the general public.
  • Requires ability to apply logic and reasoning to computer system operations problems.
  • May require extensive knowledge of mainframe and communications hardware capabilities in relation to specific data processing requirements.
  • May require extensive kowledgeof vendor supplied mainframe software and operating systems.
  • May require skill to operate, adjust and care for computer hardware and peripheral equipment.
  • May require extensive knowledge of programming procedures and techniques.
  • May require extensive knowledge of mainframe and/or mid-range computer operations.

Additionally, this position will annually accrue 12 paid sick days, a minimum of 12 paid vacation days, 4 paid personal days, and be afforded 14 paid state holidays, prorated based on start date.
