Job Summary

The Database Manager will lead our database team, driving the strategic vision and execution of database management initiatives across the organization. Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, this role is pivotal in ensuring robust support for database systems and applications that underpin our business operations. The Database Manager will oversee a growing team of database professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment. Key responsibilities include establishing and enforcing standards and best practices for database management, managing database projects, and ensuring data integrity and security. In addition to technical oversight, the Database Manager will play a crucial role in coaching, mentoring, and developing team members, supporting their career growth and skill development. This role will also champion a data-driven organization, cultivating a culture of data integrity and reliability across all departments. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills in database management, excellent leadership and communication abilities, and a proven track record in database administration. This role requires a proactive approach to stakeholder engagement, ensuring that database systems and applications are effectively integrated into business operations. The Database Manager will be driven by organizational success and have a team player attitude. 

Essential Functions

  • Lead, mentor, and coach a team of database professionals to cultivate a high-performing, collaborative, and user-focused team culture. 
  • Offer technical direction, training, and coaching to developers to help them develop skills and understand new concepts. 
  • Encourage a proactive mindset focused on continuous improvement and innovation. 
  • Ensure team members understand and fulfill their responsibilities within assigned Scrum teams. 
  • Develop and enforce standards, policies, procedures, and controls for data management, emphasizing security and system availability. 
  • Ensure adherence to data standards and compliance with relevant regulations. 
  • Implement and maintain robust security measures to protect data and investigate security events as necessary. 
  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of database systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance. 
  • Research and recommend efficient database configurations, leading implementations, upgrades, and conversions to meet business and technical requirements. 
  • Ensure comprehensive support for all database systems and applications. 
  • Monitor database performance and resources actively and develop plans to maintain system availability and manage growth. 
  • Identify and recommend database tools to facilitate effective database management. 
  • Design and prepare reports for management to provide insights into database performance and usage. 

Essential Functions Continued

  • Manage and execute database administration tasks, including upgrades, patches, user administration, tuning, and backup/restores. 
  • Work closely with the team to develop, maintain, and test database disaster recovery procedures to ensure effective recovery of the system  
  • Work closely with developers to enhance and modernize database applications. 
  • Create efficient, robust, and scalable database models that align with business requirements and objectives. 
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize custom database code, ensuring adherence to best practices in collaboration with Application Development and Security Operations. 
  • Implement proactive maintenance and monitoring strategies to ensure optimal database health and performance. 
  • Partner with the Business Intelligence team to develop data models, repositories, and warehouses that support their goals and priorities. 
  • Ensure data availability and integrity to support analytics efforts. 
  • Stay updated with industry trends and technology to recommend growth opportunities. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Mathematics, or 7 years of experience in lieu of a degree. 
  • 5+ years of database administration experience  
  • 3+ years of experience in management or lead role  
  • Proven success in leading and developing team members. 
  • Proficiency in SQL and other database management systems. 
  • Strong technical skills in data mining, data modeling, statistical analysis, account administration, patching, tuning, backups/recovery, auditing, and log reviews. 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment, effectively managing relationships with stakeholders, build and release managers, technical teams, product development, project managers, and other application managers. 
  • Experience leading projects and teams in delivering organizational goals. 
  • Experience developing and reporting metrics related to operational and financial performance. 
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or similar are preferred.
