About the position:
The Database Administrator is responsible for maintaining, supporting, and securing the software tools used for database modeling, designing development and relational database management systems, supporting software for the products, reviewing and providing technical assistance and advice on database and application design, and administering, monitoring and maintaining the database management systems and databases within the systems.
This is a covered position under the State Universities Civil Service System.

Major Duties & Responsibilities
Serves as Database Administrator, supporting the Agency in performing complex professional and advisory functions, performing business requirements analysis, workflow analysis, and working with users to write functional specifications:
- Reviews and provides technical assistance and advice on database design, application design and SQL statements and queries
- Administers, monitors, tunes, and maintains the database management systems and databases within the systems
- Develops and maintains programs, procedures, and scripts to enhance the handling, reconstruction and administration of databases and for modeling.
- Secures all database software and systems implementing the Principle of Least Privilege (PoLP) granting database users, applications, and processes only the minimal permissions necessary to perform required tasks
- Evaluates benefits and impacts of new releases, fixes, or new development products, performs tests and research studies as a prelude to recommendations to facilitate their implementation.
- Coordinates or conducts training and education for various application development groups, regarding the capabilities, utilization, and interaction of these products.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the information technology field by continuing education

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
-College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
-Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field
Additional Required Experience
- 5+ years of professional experience designing, developing, testing, and implementing information systems, including the installation, configuration, backup, restoration, and security of relational database management systems
- 5+ years of experience professional technical experience administering, monitoring, tuning, and securing relational database environments, identifying and resolving performance issues, and recommending system optimizations
- 5+ years of experience using advanced SQL (Structured Query Language) for database management, reporting, troubleshooting, and performance analysis
- 2+ years of leading the design and implementation of the Principle of Least Privilege security discipline for a SQL based relational database management system
Organizational Relationship
Position reports to the IT Systems Manager.
There are no direct reports to this position.
Work Hours: 8:00am-4:00pm Mon-Fri
Work Location: 1 N Old State Capitol Plz Springfield, IL 62701-1323* IBHE is based in Springfield, IL, however, a hybrid or remote work schedule may be available. Illinois residency is required. Travel within Illinois is expected, as required by the work.
