Job Responsibilities

This position is accountable for performing very simple and fundamental field and office surveying operations for the preparation of precise large-scale topographic mapping and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) projects for the Office of Highways Project Implementation.  In addition, this position assists other members of the Surveys, Mapping and Modeling Section in photo services, computer aided design and drafting (CADD), geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and photogrammetric support and functions. 


Photogrammetric survey program value: $1,000,000

Photogrammetric survey equipment value: $500,000

This position reports to the Photogrammetric Surveys Supervisor.  There are no subordinates reporting to this position. 

This position exists in an area where photogrammetric surveying, including target map and control survey preparation, field target setting, and processing and computation of those surveys is a critical function that must be accomplished prior to the implementation of most department projects.  The Surveys and Photo Services Unit is the centralized location in the department for statewide survey support, while providing assistance to the districts in performing precise surveying for photogrammetric mapping.  This position plays a unique role in the survey process as a member of the field photogrammetric survey crew responsible for gathering complete and accurate field data through the preparation and setting of survey control and processing of target control data. 

The major challenge facing the incumbent will be familiarizing surveying knowledge and skills to the specialized surveying requirements for photogrammetric mapping and LiDAR projects.  A typical problem is ensuring assigned survey responsibilities are completed accurately and in a timely manner to support the Surveys, Mapping and Modeling Section’s mapping program. 

The incumbent, as a survey crew member, assists in global positioning system (GPS) surveys, performance of reconnaissance surveys, project targeting development and field operations, selection of vertical and horizontal picture ties, processing of GPS data, and control monumentation.  The incumbent operates and maintains general and advanced survey equipment and assists district and the Bureau of Design and Environment staff in performing surveying functions and support related to the design and construction of department roadway and structure projects.  The incumbent assists other members of the Surveys, Mapping and Modeling Section in photo lab, CADD, GIS, remote sensing, and photogrammetric duties and functions.

The incumbent is constrained by all department policies and must conform to department approved surveying practices.  Problems of a sensitive nature are referred to the Photogrammetric Surveys Supervisor for resolution. 

The incumbent’s primary internal contacts are with district field survey personnel for the purpose of gathering information, accomplishing responsibilities, reviewing collected data, or resolving routine surveying problems. Externally, the incumbent has contacts with the general public for geodetic control monuments and with property owners explaining projects and requesting access to private property, in addition to contacts with consultant personnel who also collect survey data under the direction of the department.  Occasional statewide travel with overnight stays may be required in the completion of field duties.   

Effectiveness is measured based on the incumbent’s ability to assist a survey crew to perform the survey tasks in a manner that ensures data is complete, accurate, and provided in a timely fashion. 

Principal Accountabilities

1.    Assists the survey crews in performing necessary field and office work in preparation of large-scale precise topographic mapping and LiDAR projects.
2.    Assists district and the Bureau of Design and Environment staff in performing surveying functions related to the design and construction of department roadway and structure projects.
3.    Assists in maintaining survey equipment.
4.    Assists other members of the Surveys, Mapping and Modeling Section in photo lab, CADD, GIS, photogrammetric, and remote sensing duties and functions.
5.    Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.  Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
6.    Performs other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements

•    Education/Experience:

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, or a job-related technical/science curriculum; OR
  • Two years of engineering experience

•    Valid driver’s license
•    Occasional statewide travel with overnight stays

Position Desirables

•    Knowledge and experience in preparation of photogrammetry, aerial survey, and LiDAR workflows, targeting, and control
•    Experience using survey equipment and CADD software in survey processing or roadway and bridge design fields
•    Knowledge of general roadway and structure design and construction practices
