- As a Engineering Technician I, you have the possibility of promoting to an Engineering Technician II within 18-24 months.

Job Responsibilities
This position is accountable for the quality testing of materials used in the Concrete, Soils, and Metals Section within the department's construction and maintenance program.
Equipment values: $1,500,000
Material contract value: $750 million to $1.5 billion annually (all materials used in construction)
This position reports to the Concrete Laboratory Supervisor. There are no subordinates reporting to this position.
This position operates in an environment responsible for learning methods to maintain a planned production schedule of quality testing according to prescribed standards and how to accurately and safely perform tests, record tests, and maintain equipment in sound workable condition. This position assists other laboratories as the need arises. The incumbent may work on a rotational basis between laboratories.
The greatest challenge for the incumbent is to accurately, safely, and efficiently perform all testing according to prescribed standards and to further her/his knowledge in the field of materials testing.
The source of work performed by the incumbent is from a routine workflow system within the Concrete, Soils, and Metals Section. The work is received with laboratory numbers and test procedures assigned. It is the incumbent's duty to process the samples according to designated procedures and to record the results. Technical training is necessary to make mathematical calculations to obtain test results. In the event that samples are not in compliance with specifications it is the incumbent's duty to notify the Concrete Laboratory Supervisor. The end results of the incumbent' s work are in the form of test results.
This position is constrained by applicable departmental, state, and federal guidelines and practices. This position works under the direct supervision of the Concrete Laboratory Supervisor.
The incumbent has frequent contact with Bureau of Materials personnel from other laboratories concerning results of tests and the preparation of samples for testing. S/He has occasional contact with America, Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) personnel while demonstrating testing methods and techniques. Statewide travel with occasional overnight stays is required of this position.
The effectiveness of this position is measured by the ability of the incumbent to provide reliable test results in a timely and safe manner and maintain laboratory equipment in a workable condition.
Principal Accountabilities
1. Increases his/her ability to perform tests according to designated specifications to assure that a quality product is economically purchased.
2. Accurately, safely, and efficiently performs all testing according to prescribed standards.
3. Records the test results in an accurate and neat manner to ensure an efficient recall of test data
4. Aids in maintaining preparation and testing equipment in sound workable condition assuring that the flow of testing is not unduly interrupted.
5. Aids in maintaining a cordial relationship among all personnel to assure a safe and workable environment.
6. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Position Requirements
• Education/Experience:
- Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, or a job-related technical/science curriculum; OR
- Two years of engineering experience
• Valid driver's license
• Statewide travel with occasional overnight stays
• Physically able to routinely lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift 100 pounds
Position Desirables
• Working knowledge of math, to include trigonometry
• Working knowledge of materials testing and laboratory testing equipment
• Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions
