Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform plan reviews of architectural, MEP and fire/life safety systems to include electrical, fire alarm nurse call, security systems, mechanical, plumbing and piping engineering, medical gasses, and sprinkler systems including evaluation of specifications that are non-routine and require a variety of guides, references and precedents of health care facilities for which the Department has responsibility for licensure, inspection and certification.

Essential Functions

  • Travels to participate in “on site” inspections and surveys of existing facilities to determine conformance with applicable laws, regulations and codes relating to certain Federal assistance programs, Federal certification programs, State licensure, or generally recognized medical facility standards for architectural, MEP and fire/life safety systems.
  • Receives, reviews, approves or disapproves and/or comments upon health care drawings, specifications and change orders in accordance with the various applicable laws, regulations and codes relating to physical plant and MEP systems.
  • Completes required inspection forms in office or on site, informs health care facilities of deficiencies, evaluates and approves proposed methods of correcting deficiencies.
  • Investigates “on site” incidents/complaints for life/fire safety code and MEP systems for conformance with applicable State and Federal Codes.
  • Researches new products and their impact on existing design and construction standards.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of college work with course work in Engineering.
  • Requires three years of technical experience in Engineering.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties.
  • Requires appropriate, valid Driver’s license.
  • Requires physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, and inspect physical environment and life safety systems to include construction sites.
  • Requires completion of the Life Safety Code Surveyor certification program within 24 months of hire.
