Job Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Deputy Bureau Chief/Bureau of Land (BOL), Permit Section, Groundwater Unit A is seeking to hire an Environmental Protection Geologist IV. This position requires a Licensed Professional Geologist to perform a variety of geologic and hydrogeologic analysis pertaining to permit review of groundwater systems for the Bureau in accordance with regulations pertaining to groundwater including but not limited to, 35 IAC, Subtitle F, Part 620 and 35 IAC, Subtitle G rules.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as Working Supervisor to the geology staff in the Groundwater Unit A, Permit Section, in the Bureau of
    Land (BOL);
  • Prepares and coordinates highly technical and specialized reports incorporating geologic and hydrogeologic data;
  • Serves as the Technical Expert on highly complex, sensitive, and controversial geologic and hydrogeologic
    projects;
  • Serves as a consultant in the interpretation and evaluation of the groundwater permit application processes;
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated
    above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires possession of Illinois license as a Registered Professional Geologist.
  •  Requires bachelor’s degree in geology including 12-16 semester credit hours in groundwater geology, hydrology, soil

physics, and/or soil chemistry.

  •  Requires four years professional experience as an Environmental Protection Geologist or as an Environmental Protection

Specialist with equivalent professional geologic science experience or equivalent professional geological sciences work
experience.

Specialized Skills

  • Requires four years experience in interpreting and administering State and Federal regulations in accordance with RCRA

including, but not limited to, permitting pursuant to 35 IAC, Subtitle G rules.

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Prefers 4 years experience in interpreting and applying State and Federal regulations in accordance with RCRA including,

but not limited to, permitting pursuant to 35 IAC, Subtitle G rules.

  • Prefers 4 years of experience serving as a mentor and senior member of a team of professionals engaged in geologic and

hydrogeologic surveys and investigations.

  •  Prefers 4 years of experience evaluating and analyzing geologic and hydrogeologic data and making recommendations

from conclusions.

  •  Prefers 4 years of experience in the use and application of geologic instruments and understanding of the data the

instruments provide.

  •  Prefers 4 years of experience in advising and cooperating with private and local organizations and stakeholders.
  •  Prefers extensive knowledge of groundwater geologic and hydrogeologic methods, procedures, and techniques.
  •  Prefers extensive knowledge in communicating with all levels of stakeholders in an organization both internal and external.
  •  Prefers the ability to utilize a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access software.

  •  As required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120, this position will be required to take (within 90 days of employment) and maintain

working knowledge of (8 hr. annual refresher) and/or certification to ensure position is up to date with laws, rules, and
regulations to maintain compliance with IL Department of Labor Occupational Safety Regulations:24-hour OSHA Training.
