Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision of Regional Manager in Northern Region performs journeyman level professional fire inspection duties; utilizes a state vehicle to travel throughout the state to conduct more technical fire prevention inspections such as flammable liquids and gases, large occupancies that may require more· extensive code interpretation, permanently moored vessels, correctional facilities, etc.; serves as a resource person in the field of fire prevention inspections with local fire departments; assist in training lower level personnel.

 

40%   Utilizes a state vehicle to travel throughout the state to conduct on-site inspections of a variety of state licensed facilities including day care centers, group homes, adult day care, community integrated living arrangements, private schools, etc.; inspect correctional facilities, areas of public assembly, businesses, churches and various mixed occupancies. Inspection reports are provided to facility owner and kept on file.

20%   Utilizes a state vehicle to travel throughout the state to conduct on-site inspections of public schools under the auspices of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE); prepares checklist and reports to Regional Office of Education of the ISBE and the agency.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

15%  Utilizes a state vehicle to travel throughout the state to conduct re-inspections of a previous violation, checking on compliance progress, violations are recorded and follow-ups are made. Inspection reports are provided to facility owner and kept on file.

5%    Investigate complaints as to fire hazards from citizens and local fire departments.

5%    Attend appeal hearings held in appropriate geographical office to verify statements made on previously submitted written violations.

5%    Assist supervisor in training new employees in the operation of the duties of Fire Safety Inspector for the Office of the State Fire Marshal; the use of code books and how to interpret the laws and apply same in their inspectional procedures; prepare and send to assigned geographical office (Marion, Chicago, or Springfield) weekly activity reports.

5%    Contact local fire departments in assigned counties to be of assistance in their programs of fire prevention; contact is made with local fire departments before inspections are conducted within their respective jurisdiction.

5%    Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

 

Employment Conditions

 

  • Requires the ability to climb stairs and/or ladders.
  • Requires selected candidate to live in DuPage County (or a contingent county) within 6-months of hire.

Physical Requirements

 

  • Requires possession of a valid appropriate driver's license or an ability to travel.

Education Degree

 

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years college.
  • Requires 1 year professional work experience as a Fire Prevention Inspector I for the Office of the State Fire Marshal with certification as a Fire Prevention Inspector II by the national Fire Safety standards organization that publishes the fire safety standard adopted by the State.

 

Work Hours:  4 Day work week.  Three 9.5 hour days and one 9 hour day.
