Job Responsibilities

Under immediate supervision of the Toxicology training coordinator, participates in the Forensic Toxicology Section training program; receives work assignments designed to develop knowledge, understanding, and technical skills related to examinations in specialty areas of the section which include cannabis, controlled substances, and clandestine laboratories; demonstrates proficiency in the various examinations, techniques, and instrumentation taught; writes reports on examination results; establishes working relationships with staff members; observes courtroom procedures and demeanor, and participates in skill development mock trials.

 

40%  1.  Receives comprehensive training in the Toxicology Training program; receives work assignments designed to develop knowledge, understanding, and technical skills related to examinations of in the specialty areas of the section which include cannabis, controlled substances, and clandestine laboratories; and demonstrates proficiency in the various examinations, techniques, and instruments taught.

20%  2.  Prepares written reports of examination results, statistical data, and research projects. Receives instruction on preparing chemicals and in maintaining quality control.

20%  3.  Participates in laboratory meetings to establish working relationships with staff members and all law enforcement personnel; develops knowledge of agency programs; and confers with laboratory staff to share information and knowledge. 

10%  4.  Participates in skill development mock trials; prepares for the presentation of testimony in the courts, including case review and pretrial conferences; and observes actual courtroom procedures.

5%   5.  Reviews books, journals, periodicals, and other assigned literature to develop and maintain expertise in toxicology.

5%   6.  Other duties as assigned or required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires elementary knowledge of basic statistical methods and procedures.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of laboratory techniques used for scientific examination of physical evidence.
  • Requires ability to maintain and establish satisfactory working relationships with coworkers, various law enforcement personnel, and legal system personnel.
  • Requires ability to communicate ideas effectively in oral and written form.
  • Requires ability to construct court exhibits and demonstration charts.
  • Requires ability to analyze and correlate data contained in reports of crime.
  • Requires ability to develop evidence and to present it convincingly in written reports or orally.
  • Requires ability to compare, analyze, and/or identify physical materials and other matters.

 

Employment Conditions

  • Requires ability to pass an agency background investigation.

  • Subject to pre-employment and ongoing random drug screenings.

Minimum Qualifications

Option B – Toxicology:  Requires a bachelor’s degree in a natural science or forensic science including a minimum of 20 semester hours of coursework in chemistry with a total of 60 semester hours of coursework in natural science.
