Job Responsibilities

Under general direction, utilizing geographic information technology hardware and software, performs GIS program activities on more complex, short term or long term project assignments; researches geographical relationships between departmental spatial databases in order to provide information to agency management staff and other state agencies for utilization in policy-making decisions. Develops analytical methods for using the GIS in a production environment using Information from the GIS mainframe, LAN or outside sources; drafts standards and procedures and uses technical knowledge to instruct GIS users regarding new software or equipment, interpreting and drawing complex legal descriptions, data backup procedures, digitizing, map creation, formulating metadata standards and completing special projects. Writes, tests, documents, and maintains statistical programs to perform complex routines and to generate reports which are then input to GIS software for production of maps.  Assists manager with training, monitoring work flow, developing work schedules, and quality control of production.Travels to perform duties.

 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


     

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college with a minimum of 20 semester hours from the related academic disciplines of geography, GIS technology, cartography and computer science; requires completion of an agency sponsored training program and two years professional experience in GIS or three years of professional experience in GIS. Requires extensive knowledge of the methods and techniques employed in creating maps and GIS products; requires extensive knowledge of research methods and techniques to analyze statistical and spatial data; requires extensive knowledge of geographical information system technology and software applications; requires working knowledge of computer operating systems; requires ability to gain and maintain satisfactory working relationships with government officials and the general public.  Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel.
