Job Responsibilities

Under administrative direction, performs complex professional, advisory and technical functions for Local Area Network Services (LAN), supporting multiple state-wide locations. Performs complex hardware and software setups, installations, design specifications for, development of, and modifications to complex Data Center network communications, including various LAN components and assumes accountability of all associated work products. Serves as project coordinator for complex infrastructure deployments and projects. Serves as technical project leader for design, development and modification of complex Data Center network communications. Confers with customers in high stress situations to troubleshoot complex Enterprise systems, end user communication problems, system intrusions, and Data Center communication services; serves on-call In emergency situations. Lifts equipment weighing up to 75 pounds; travels to attend meetings, training and to perform work functions.

  • Performs complex hardware and software setups, installations, design specifications for, development of, and modifications to complex Data Center network communications, Including various LAN components and assumes accountability of all associated work products.
  • Determines layout and specifications to design develop and modify complex network communications, including various LAN components such as routers, firewalls, switches, intrusion detection, load balancers, web gateways, cabling, wireless controllers, etc. and assumes accountability of associated work products within the statewide network.
  • Performs complex hardware and software setups and Installations: tests and maintains various brands of LAN switches, routers, firewalls, Intrusion detection, load balancers, web gateways, cabling wireless controllers, network security devices, etc., including physical installation of equipment, configurations of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Virtual LAN (VLAN), Virtual Private Network (VPN), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol port translation.
  • Serves as project coordinator for full-range major/complex projects, very large hardware/software deployments and installations across multiple agencies and locations.
  • Researches and implements new technologies. Keeps abreast of new developments In the Information Technology (IT) field; continues education by attending meetings, training sessions, seminars and conferences to increase familiarity with and maintain current on IT products, vendors, techniques and procedures applicable to Section activities.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to four years of college with course work in computer engineering, computer science or directly related fields, supplemented by three years of professional experience in a related Information Technology field. Requires the ability to gain and maintain effective working relationships with agency officials, associates, vendors, clients, and others. Requires the ability to utilize agency provided materials/equipment (e.g. cell phone, etc). Requires extensive knowledge of current networking technologies, network hardware, network software, network protocols, project coordination, and multitasking abilities. Requires analytical skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex network problems independently. Requires developed written and oral communications skills and experience. Requires a valid driver's license. the ability to travel and serve on an on-call basis. Requires the ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Cisco Certified Network Associate, Cisco Certified Design Associate, or other routing and switching certifications preferred. Cisco Qualified Specialist Certification (Video, VoIP, Security, Wireless, Optical, etc.) is preferred.
Specialized Skills: Requires professional experience as outlined above in the following: Administration of Enterprise Firewall, L2 switching, application load balancing, ion, Layer 3 Switching, Data Center Switching Architecture, Cloud computing network security, Data Center capacity planning, Internet Gateways, Internet Filtering, Local Area Network design, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), Internet Protocol (IP), Quality of Service (QoS) Architecture, Packet Analyzers, Internet Protocol Security (IPSEC) Virtual Private Network (VPN), Video over IP, Voice over IP, Enterprise Wireless LAN Controllers administration, Domain Name Services, IP address management.


Requires the ability to successfully complete a nationwide background check, which includes fingerprints and photograph, as defined by the Internal Revenue Service Pub 1075.
