POSITION SUMMARY

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services is seeking to hire a Building Laborer within the Bureau of Property Management. This hands on position performs routine manual labor in assisting skilled carpenters, electricians, engineers, plumbers, and contractual staff for the Illinois Department of Transportation at the Hanley Aeronautics/Airport and Central State Garage Facilities in the Central & Southern region. Duties include but are not limited to assisting with construction, repair, renovations, installation and maintenance of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, carpets, doors, and ceilings. This position also performs various grounds maintenance tasks such as maintaining lawns and grounds, mowing, trimming, and removing snow using various building and grounds equipment. The ideal candidate is someone who is self-motivated, attentive to detail, has strong communication skills, and is organized. We invite all qualified candidates to apply! 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Under immediate supervision, receives day-to-day guidance and assignments from the Chief Engineer performing routine manual labor in assisting skilled persons such as carpenters, electricians, engineers, plumbers, contractual staff, etc. for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Hanely, District 6, Aeronautics, Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), Maintenance Lab, Central State Garage facilities, and other Central Management Services (CMS) operated or managed facilities within the Central and Southern Region on an as needed basis.
  • Assists trades and maintenance staff with office and equipment moves.
  • Assists grounds and maintenance staff with performing various grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Performs basic upkeep and maintenance duties for skilled tradesman’s work area before and after completion of jobs.
  • Exercises appropriate safety precautions in the use and handling of tools and equipment, paying particular attention to these procedures when working in and around all workspace environments/locations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefers working knowledge of trades tools, including operating hand and power tools.
  • Prefers working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques used in the operation of the laborer trade.
  • Prefers working knowledge of the operation of electrical, plumbing, carpenter, engineer, and painter trades.
  • Prefers working knowledge of welding, welding fabrications, techniques, and practices.
  • Prefers working knowledge of performing repairs and maintaining equipment and machinery.
  • Prefers working knowledge of operational equipment such as trucks, trailers, and lifts.
  • Prefers one (1) year of professional experience following oral and/or written instructions.
  • Prefers working knowledge of reading and understanding mechanical blueprints and technical equipment manuals.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
  • Requires possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-Hour General Industry Course certificate.
  • Requires the ability to lift and move equipment/machinery up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance).
  • Requires the ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, rooftops, at heights up to 25 feet above ground, and work outdoors.
  • Requires the ability to sit and stand for long periods of time and the ability to maneuver and work in crawl spaces.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to other facilities in the region.
  • Requires the ability to use agency technology/equipment (i.e., smart phone, laptop, etc.) properly in accordance with information security awareness policies and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Requires the ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.
