Essential Functions
- Performs a variety of routine labor tasks to assist skilled trade staff (including but not limited to carpenters, electricians, engineers, plumbers, etc.) during projects to maintain, repair, and improvements to the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
- Completes basic facility operation maintenance duties for the Illinois State Fairgrounds buildings, grounds, and state-owned equipment.
- Assists various skilled trades with the preparation for projects, such as preparing surfaces, pouring, demoing, and finishing concrete and asphalt, and setting forms.
- Performs basic job site upkeep, maintenance, and clean up duties for skilled tradesmen's before, during, after project completion.
- Performs other duties as required for assigned which are within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers the completion of a Laborer Apprenticeship.
- Prefers five (5) years of experience assisting other building trades such as electricians, carpenters, and plumbers.
- Prefers five (5) years of experience working with pouring, demoing, and finishing concrete and asphalt.
- Prefers five (5) years of experience reading, executing, and completing both verbal and written work orders.
- Prefers five (5) years of experience working with tools, methods, and standard practices of the laborer trade or general construction, including bending, lifting, transporting and safety practices.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires completion of a name-based background screening and self-disclosure of criminal history.
- Requires the ability to successfully pass a preemployment physical.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- This position is considered very heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(e)). Very Heavy work involves lifting objects weighing more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Must have the ability to walk and climb hills, stairs and ladders.
