Position Overview:

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) is seeking to fill the role of Manuscripts Librarian. Under the general direction of the Library Services Special Collections Manuscripts Unit Supervisor, this position performs a variety of professional archival tasks related to the receiving, processing, description, and accessibility of manuscript collections held by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM). The position assists patrons and staff in the effective use of manuscript resources and supports the development of high‑quality descriptive tools.

Essential Functions

  • Under general direction of the Library Services Special Collections Manuscripts Unit Supervisor, performs a variety of professional tasks in the receiving and processing of manuscript collections received by the ALPLM.
  • Assists patrons and staff in utilizing manuscript collections; explains resources/facilities available upon request.
  • Prepares (writes) descriptive narratives of collections, including standard bibliographic data, historical sketch, general description of material, detailed container list, and analysis/evaluation of the historical significance and research possibilities of the collection; updates online finding aids.
  • Explains library resources to authors, scholars, professional staff and other patrons.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in library science, history, information science, English, criminal justice, psychology, education, or a related field of study.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers two (2) years’ experience with creating online finding aids such as Aeon or Archives Space.
  • Prefers two (2) years demonstrated experience with archival theory and practice and relevant legal and ethical regulations and best practices that govern the arrangement, description and use of archival materials, including Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Describing
  • Prefers two (2) years’ experience digitizing and scanning historical collections.
  • Prefers two (2) years’ experience with maintaining special collections.
  • Prefers two (2) years’ experience working with historical researchers.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
