The Illinois Department of Public Health's, Division of Epidemiologic Studies, Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Reporting System (APORS) collects information on Illinois infants born with birth defects or other abnormal conditions. The purpose of APORS is to conduct surveillance on adverse pregnancy outcomes, to guide public health policy in the reduction of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and to identify and refer children who require special services to correct and prevent developmental problems and other disabling conditions.  This individual would be responsible for identifying and documenting birth defects and other adverse pregnancy outcomes from medical records and other sources.

Essential Functions

  • Under general supervision, applies knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures necessary to maintain consistency and continuity.
  • Reviews case load, plans abstracting schedule and requests medical records for review, and abstracts medical records.
  • Conducts quality control studies to ascertain completeness and quality of reporting by facilities.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to either four (4) years of vital records supervisory experience in vital records management or four (4) years of college with courses in liberal arts, political science, business law or related.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year experience of specific medical terminology, including obstetric and perinatal medical terms and abbreviations.
  • One (1) year experience using Microsoft software products Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • One (1) year experience reviewing and abstracting medical records.
  • One (1) year experience collecting and submitting study information.
  • One (1) year experience conducting quality control studies.

 

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
