Position Statement: The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is seeking to hire Nuclear Safety Health Physics Technician I. Located in the Radiological Response Section with the Office of Nuclear Safety, this position performs planning, training, and response operations for nuclear power stations and other potential radiological/nuclear incidents that may occur within the state of Illinois. Essential Functions
- Plans, develops, trains, and implements programs to assure the safety of the public from the potential hazards associated with releases of radioactive material during radiological events.
- Performs technical level and professional duties which require the application of routine health physics procedures and principals.
- Assists in maintenance, repair, and calibration of equipment including all radiation detection and measurement equipment and personal protective equipment.
- Conducts and coordinates maintenance, repair and inspections of vehicles and trailers operated by the division.
- Performs the assigned duties for the Radiological Task Force and remains available for callback during emergency conditions.
- Performs other duties as required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree with major course work in physics, chemistry, engineering, or mathematics and preferably including course work in nuclear sciences.
- Requires one (1) year of professional experience in the practice of health physics, radiochemistry, environmental safety, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience working with ionizing radiation, the physical and chemical properties of radioisotopes, and the biological and physical effects of radiation.
- One (1) year of experience working with applicable radiation protection standards, and familiarity with radiation measuring equipment, radiochemistry, and environmental monitoring methods.
- One (1) year of experience understanding and applying rules, regulations, survey procedures, and sample collection procedures.
- One (1) year of experience in environmental sampling, sample submittal, and laboratory processes.
- OHSA Hazwoper certification at the technician level in both general site worker and emergency response.
Conditions of Employment
- A criminal history check with the Illinois State Police.
- Requires ability to use state-supplied equipment such as cell phone, laptop, etc.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to become Hazwoper certified at the technician level in both general site worker and emergency response.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
