Position Marketing Statement
The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is accepting applications to fill the position of Executive I – National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) Program Specialist. The agency is seeking an organized and professional candidate with an eye for detail and exceptional analytical proficiency. The ability to professionally collaborate and interact with the fire service, other agencies, and the public is a must in this position. Experience with public speaking and promotion of agency or other outside programs is of great benefit. As an Executive I – NERIS Program Specialist and employee of the State of Illinois, the selected candidate will have access to state healthcare, benefits, and a pension plan. Essential Functions
- Serves as the statewide as National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) Program Specialist and Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) liaison to the Illinois Fire Service.
- Analyzes NERIS data and provides reporting and analytics.
- Works with representatives from the fire service, state agencies, and other educational professionals to promote public education/community risk reduction programs.
- Promotes and maintains the agency’s fire equipment exchange program.
- Assists with the operation, coordination, and promotion of the OSFM Fire Museum.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in business and public administration.
- Requires one (1) year of progressively responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization or completion of an agency approved professional management training program.
Specialized Skills
- Requires one (1) or more years of experience working with a comprehensive emergency response software platform for all-hazard incident reporting, such as, National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and/or National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS).
- Requires one (1) or more years of experience of providing training workshops.
- Requires one (1) or more years of experience of collecting, cataloguing, and properly maintaining historical artifacts.
- Requires one (1) or more years of experience in a public safety organization focusing on promoting fire safety and/or public outreach programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers one (1) or more year of experience working with a comprehensive emergency response software platform for all-hazard incident reporting, such as, National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and/or National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS).
- Prefers (1) or more years of experience providing training workshops for large groups.
- Prefers one (1) or more years of experience in the collecting, cataloguing, and proper maintenance of historical artifacts.
- Prefers one (1) or more years of experience promoting fire safety and/or public outreach programs.
- Prefers completion of the Incident Command System (ICS) 100 level, (ICS) 200 level, (IS) 700, and (IS) 800 level training classes.
- Prefers one (1) year of professional experience working with and promoting community risk reduction programs.
- Prefers two (2) or more years of experience estimating and budgeting for program needs.
- Prefers two (2) or more years of experience compiling and organizing large datasets to support strategic decision-making.
- Prefers two (2) or more years of experience creating and presenting reports based on identified trends.
- Prefers three (3) or more years in the utilization of MS Office programs which include MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
Conditions of Employment

- Requires the ability to travel with overnight stays as appropriate.
- Requires the ability to pass drug screening.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
