Position Overview

The Department of Agriculture is seeking to hire an Office Specialist in the Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare.  This position performs specialized duties for the animal welfare program in the licensure of establishment housing or selling companion animals. We invite qualified applicants to apply for this position to help the Department of Agriculture ensure the humane care of animals.

Job Responsibilities

1. Process requests for the Freedom of Information Act received by the bureau.

2. Receives, screens and coordinates complaints relative to noncompliance (dockets).

3. Compiles documentation for administrative hearings.

4. Receives, screens, and coordinates initial animal welfare license applications.

5. Oversees the federal premise identification system

6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to two (2) years of secretarial/business college and one (1) year of office experience, OR
  2. Requires completion of high school and three (3) years of office experience, OR
  3. Requires three years of independent business experience.
  4. Qualifying state employees, in the employee Upward Mobility Program, may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
  5. Requires the ability to type from copy at a minimum net rate of 30 words per minute. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Extensive knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  2. Extensive knowledge of composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  3. Extensive knowledge of arithmetic computations.
  4. Extensive knowledge of the logic of computer language/programs.
  5. Extensive knowledge of manual and automated office equipment.
  6. Working knowledge of agency programs, rules, and regulations.
  7.  Ability to instruct, guide and train others.
  8. Ability to establish and develop written instructions and procedures.
