Agency Marketing Statement

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is tasked with the oversight of communities within Illinois to achieve and maintain optimal health and safety.  With an annual budget of over $600 million in state and federal funds, 7 regional offices, 3 laboratories and over 1,100 employees, IDPH is equipped to fulfill its mission of protecting the health and wellness of the people of Illinois through the prevention, health promotion, regulation and control of disease and injury.

Position Overview

Under general direction of the Communicable Disease Control Section (CDCS) Data Coordinator, functions as the coordinator of data management for the CDCS.  Monitors and analyzes communicable disease data to determine any change in disease trends, performs quality control checks to validate accuracy of data; develops statistical reports of the section’s morbidity, transmits and monitors weekly morbidity data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention using the Illinois National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (I-NEDSS). Prepares ad hoc data reports to respond to critical disease control issues or media requests; collects detailed medical histories for persons traveling abroad and prepares computerized reports on health information for international travel including specific vaccinations or other medications needed for safe travel. Prepares computerized data reports upon request to address medial requests, requests from local health departments and CDCS staff who need information for program management and case/cluster/outbreak detection.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Monitors and analyzes communicable disease data to determine any change in disease trends, performs quality control checks to validate accuracy of data.
  2. Serves as working supervisor; assigns and reviews work; provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
  3. Develops individual computerized reports detailing personalized health information requested by international travelers.
  4. Provides technical guidance to CDCS staff members on a variety of computer applications, including Epi-info software and other surveillance applications.
  5. Prepares computerized data reports upon request to address medial requests, requests from local health departments and CDCS staff who need information for program management and case/cluster/outbreak detection.
  6. Develops technically oriented graphics using computer applications, including PowerPoint , Corel and other available software tools for CDCS staff for inclusion in reports and when staff members give presentations.
  7. Travels to assist and provide back up and emergency response support to local health departments with outbreak containment issues, as deemed appropriate by the Chief of the Communicable Disease Control Section.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above or set forth in federal grant agreements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with courses in health education, physical and biological sciences. 
  • Requires three years of professional experience in a health education or investigation program in the public or private sector. 
  • Requires a high degree of proficiency in Epi-Info, NOMAD, I-NEDSS, TRAVAX, Microsoft Applications, and a working knowledge of how these systems apply to Illinois outbreak surveillance tracking system.
