Position Overview

The mission of the Illinois State Police Office of Firearms Safety is to work proactively with its partners at schools, law enforcement agencies, and medical facilities throughout Illinois to prevent gun violence and save lives by (1) prohibiting legal-firearms access to people who pose a clear and present danger to themselves and/or others and (2) providing comprehensive training, education, and resources to all stakeholders entrusted with identifying and reporting these threats in their communities before tragedy strikes. Essential Functions

  • Serves as technical expert for the determination of Clear and Present Danger as it related to the State of Illinois.
  • Serves as advanced specialist on the Office of Firearms Safety (OFS) Clear and Present Danger Unit.
  • Acts as an ambassador for the Clear and Present Danger Unit with a variety of organizations with a high emphasis on Law Enforcement outreach programs.
  • Serves as a Working Supervisor.
  • Makes recommendations concerning drafting of proposed bills, amendments, and resolutions which affect state and local law enforcement agencies and the general public as it relates to the Office of Firearms Safety mission.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college with coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, or public administration.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of professional experience in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers two (2) years’ experience in a large statewide program, public or private sector
  • Prefers two (2) years' experience developing, installing and evaluating new and revised methods, procedures, and performance standards.
  • Prefers two (2) years' experience with the ability to exercise judgement and discretion in developing, implementing, and interpreting departmental policies and procedures.
  • Prefers two (2) years' extensive knowledge of agency programs, service objectives, activities, and operational systems.
  • Prefers two (2) years' experience exercising discretion, judgement, and confidentiality.
  • Prefers two (2) years' extensive knowledge of federal and state statutes in all areas impacting Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) and Concealed Carry License (CCL).
  • Prefers two (2) years' extensive knowledge of complex databases used in researching criminal histories.
  • Prefers two (2) years' extensive knowledge of labor and employment development. 
  • Prefers ability to recognize and comprehend vital Law Enforcement terminology to include, but not limited to; LEADS, CHRI, NICS, IIII, IL SID, ORI, Class 2, and Class A.
  • Prefers ability to manage and supervise staff performing diverse functions and responsibilities.
