This position serves in a regional capacity. Persons serving in this role are required to assume residency in Dekalb, Lee, Ogle or contiguous county and will be required to work from their home location as a base of daily operational headquarters to service their designated worksites.

Essential Functions

  • Participates in on-the-job training in inspection techniques for inspecting, grading and certifying shell eggs at retail outlets and institutional locations for compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Receives formal and on-the-job training in the application of laws, rules and regulations administered in the Egg Inspection Program.
  • Receives initial training in performing County of Origin Labeling (COOL) Reviews.
  • Learns and follows policy and procedure for care and use of state vehicle, computer, cellular devices, printer, and testing equipment.
  • Participates in complaint investigations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of two years of college, preferably, with coursework in fields relating to business, management or communications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of college, in the following order: associate degree, bachelor’s degree, advanced degree.
  • Prefers completion of education beyond two years of college with a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in the fields of accounting, agriculture, animal sciences, business, communications, management, public health or science.
  • Prefers two years of experience in applying or complying with federal and/or state statutes and regulations governing inspections and/or investigation of animals, animal products, and facilities to determine compliance with equipment and facility requirements, labeling, packaging, record keeping, and sanitation.
  • Prefers experience communicating with associates, businesses, and/or the general public regarding rules, procedures and/or regulatory information.
  • Prefers the organizational skills and decision-making ability to prepare clear and concise written records and reports and correspondence, gather and assemble evidence, interpret compliance and issue violations.
  • Prefers elementary knowledge of federal and state statutes, rules and regulations regarding inspecting, grading, and certifying shell eggs.
  • Prefers the ability to establish and maintain oral communication and working relationships with businesses, comparable governmental agencies, small producers, farm and facility operators and owners, or their representatives.
  • Prefers the ability to follow oral and written instruction, to write legibly and comprehensively, to accurately fill out forms and reports, and skills in conflict resolution.
  • Prefers a basic MS office proficiency: the ability to use a computer, cellular devices and required software.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires the ability to successfully pass a pre-employment physical.
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
  • Requires the ability to perform inspections outside during all seasons and in environments with dust, chemicals, livestock, and refrigerated areas.
  • Requires residency in Ogle, Lee or DeKalb county.
