Position Overview

The Department of Human Services is pleased to announce an opening for a Public Administration Intern within the Office of Budget. The Office of Budget is seeking to hire a dynamic and detail-oriented individual who is looking for an opportunity to participate in an agency-sponsored training program of not less than 12 months to a maximum of 24 months. The candidate will receive work assignments designed to develop a knowledge, understanding and practical skills consistent with creation of the agency’s budget as administered by the Office of Budget, Department of Human Services.

Job Responsibilities

1. Actively participates in a training program designed to give working knowledge of the development and fiscal impact of DHS budgets.

 

2. Gains and develops skills to interpret and explain program data as it relates to understanding the salient issues of specified agency programs while utilizing Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, and SAP software programs/systems.

 

3. Gains experience in the enhancement of communication skills, both orally and in writing, when communicating to supervisors the ongoing trends of program areas plus potential programs.

 

4. Gains experience and knowledge monitoring current year activities in budget issues among program areas.

 

5. Learns methods to work cooperatively with other analysts and DHS program staff.

 

6. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires a bachelor’s or higher degree with major coursework in public administration, business administration, political science or a related field. The degree – regardless of level – must have been obtained no earlier than 18 months prior to submitting an application for the class, unless waived in writing by the Director of Central Management Services.
  2. Requires experience with the application of public administration tenets as one might have been obtained in collegiate organizations, volunteer participation or by employment.

Preferred Qualifications (in priority order)

  1. One (1) year of experience with budgeting, as might have been obtained in collegiate organizations, volunteer participation or by employment.
  2. Basic proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Access, and Word.
  3. Basic proficiency in the use of an electronic accounting system, such as ERP, SAP, etc.
  4. One (1) year of experience analyzing and interpreting financial data.
  5. One (1) year of experience meeting deadlines with strong attention to detail and the ability to utilize critical thinking skills while multi-tasking multiple projects.
  6. One (1) year of experience communicating in oral and written form ensuring detailed and critical analysis of work performed.
  7. One (1) year of experience preparing written or oral reports.
  8. One (1) year of experience applying learned knowledges and techniques to working environment.
