Job Responsibilities
Under general direction as senior specialist, performs complex inspections and provides additional on the job training to other railroad safety specialists in the track safety program; reviews reports prepared by lower level specialists; prepares inspection itineraries to inspect all assigned trackage with minimal travel; prepares testimony and formal track safety violations for prosecution and makes reconmendations on track safety issues; acts as "Chaser" to respond to accidents/incidents as set forth in (7) below.
Education, experience, and Training required
Requires a bachelor of science degree in engineering or the equivalent and two years recent experience in the track maintenance field; experience within the railroad industry may be substituted for the college on a two-year-for-one-year basis; extensive knowledge of the federal track safety regulations, Illinois Commercial Transportation Law and Illinois Commerce Commission rules; extensive knowledge of track inspection techniques, track maintenance methods and equipment; ability to collect and review data and field information in order to render preliminary findings, conclusions and recommendations both informally and at formal hearings; ability to use personal computers to create and manage computer databases and generate reports; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with fellow employees, the public, local and state authorities, railroad and FRA employees; and ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing. Must complete FRA certification as a track inspector within twelve months of date of hire.
