The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is seeking highly motivated individuals for Revenue Auditor I positions.  We seek candidates with a business-centered educational background - with a focus on accounting - and an ability to critically think, work independently, and effectively communicate both within the organization and to external stakeholders.  IDOR administers Illinois tax laws and collects taxes in a fair, consistent, and efficient manner and an auditor’s duties and responsibilities are to ensure taxpayer compliance of various tax laws.  This auditor position can include a variety of roles, from conducting field examinations to supporting functions of the audit process.

Job Responsibilities

  • At a developmental level, independently and/or as a member of a team, conducts field and/or office audits either manually or via personal computer, which often include highly sensitive cases and/or less complex or medium sized Illinois and out-of-state corporations, industries, business organizations, or self-employed taxpayer returns.
  • Conducts specialized technical research of tax accounts referred from other areas of IDOR to determine whether tax compliance problems exist.
  • Resolves complex technical, controversial or highly sensitive cases and/or issues.
  • Analyzes and reviews completed audits involving various Sales & Miscellaneous taxes administered by IDOR.
  • Receives advanced classroom and on-the-job training involving new or revised statutes, rules and regulations, IDOR policies and procedures and personal computer audit methods and techniques to enhance auditing skills and knowledge.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or finance, with a minimum of 21 semester hours of progressive coursework in accounting, and additional coursework in management and business administration, business law, computer science, economics and statistics.
  • Requires completion of an agency approved training program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of methods and techniques of tax accounting and auditing.
  • Requires working knowledge and understanding of the various types of records maintained by businesses, partnerships and individuals.
  • Requires working knowledge of the various tax laws administered by the Department of Revenue.
  • Requires working knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques utilized in the examination and review of tax returns and supporting documentation, and in determining and recommending appropriate corrective action.
  • Requires working knowledge of files, procedural manuals and other related materials utilized in the research and analysis of tax returns and supporting documentation.
  • Requires ability to read, interpret and analyze journals, ledgers, balance sheets, and other types of financial documentation.
  • Requires ability to detect computational, noncompliance, legal and/or technical errors in the process of reviewing tax returns and supporting documentation, and makes determinations within established guidelines.
  • Requires ability to prepare and maintain statistical and informational records and reports.
  • Requires ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Requires ability to obtain necessary information in a tactful and diplomatic manner.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability and willingness to travel extensively and frequently, often keeping irregular hours.
  • Requires access to an automobile, and possession of a valid driver's license for the operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds including transporting and utilizing a laptop computer.
  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
