The Illinois Department of Revenue Taxpayer Services Administration is seeking to hire fourteen (14) highly motivated individuals to serve in our Customer Service Bureau call center as a Revenue Tax Specialist 1 (RTS 1). Successful candidates will assist Illinois individual and business taxpayers by telephone and utilizing their previous training on a variety of Illinois tax laws and tax operating software.

Job Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, confers with individual taxpayers, their representatives and others providing information, assistance, guidance and instructions via toll-free lines and/or the Automatic Call Distributer/Interactive Voice Recognition Unit (ACD/VRU), written or personal inquiries.
  • Analyzes and processes or adjusts routine and involved accounts & returns.
  • Determines progressively difficult research methods necessary for resolution of discrepancies or deficiencies in order to adjust taxpayer accounts.
  • Initiates oral and/or written communication to taxpayers.
  • Receives on-the-job training in processing non-routine and highly technical amended tax returns, schedules and supporting documentation, computer generated notices, correspondence, manual and automated account records, priority accounts, legislative referrals, disputed billings, reasonable cause requests, applications for license under the Bingo Tax Act, Charitable Games Act and Pull Tab and Jar Games Act, and other documents of increasing difficulty for compliance with current tax laws, rules and regulations, mathematical, technical and procedural accuracy.
  • Serves as a member of special project or test teams, assigned to perform specific development level studies, during the development and testing of new procedures and/or automated systems.
  • Computes tax, penalty and interest due or payable.
  • Approves or denies reasonable cause requests based on procedural and statutory guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree.
  • -OR- Requires nine years Department of Revenue experience and completion of the Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee Program.


Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
  • Requires a valid Driver’s License and ability to travel.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry tax documents weighing 25 pounds or up to 50 pounds with assistance.
