This position serves as the Reference Librarian for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM), a world class institution that has welcomed almost 6 million visitors since 2005 and that houses one of the world’s best collections of Lincoln-related documents, artifacts and audiovisual materials. Serve as Reference Librarian for an unparalleled collection of over 13 million unique items documenting all aspects of American history. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum offers a robust benefit package including:

Essential Functions

  • Serves as the Reference Librarian.
  • Performs complex reference work and historical research in response to internal agency requests.
  • Works closely with cataloging department to assist with collection maintenance utilizing library software.
  • Hosts visiting groups to library and presents public programs regarding the use of collections, the library in general, and the published collection.
  • Prepares written and oral reports.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in library science, history, information science, English, criminal justice, psychology, education, or a related field of study.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers one (1) year experience utilizing research and reference procedures.
  • Prefers one (1) year experience adapting library science theory to the requirements of an educational and/or historical research library.
  • Prefers one (1) year experience establishing, maintaining and directing an efficient library system or program.
  • Prefers one (1) year experience utilizing library equipment and technology.
  • Prefers one (1) years’ experience maintaining accurate and orderly reference files, and preparing comprehensive reports on library operations, use and requirements.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
