Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Agriculture is seeking individuals, for temporary employment not to exceed 6 months, for the Illinois State Fair summer season. Temporary employees are needed for the following areas: Maintenance, State Fair customer service, Cashier, Ticket Sales, Grandstand Ticket Takers and Security.  This is an ideal opportunity for anyone looking to work in a constantly changing fast paced environment.  Successful candidates will be individuals who can work promptly and efficiently in order to maintain that the Illinois State Fair, as well as non-fair events, run effectively.  Applicants are encouraged to apply early as offers for positions will be made on a first come first serve basis.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of routine clerical duties.
  • Maintains clean, safe and attractive public use areas.
  • Makes periodic rounds of buildings and grounds for protection against fire, theft or other losses.
  • Sweeps, scrubs and polishes floors for maintenance of the buildings and grounds on the Illinois State Fairground.
  • Moves heavy equipment and office equipment including chairs, desks, file cabinets, and transports machinery to garage for major repairs.
  • Picks up and hauls garbage and manure.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above for a period not to exceed 6 months.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of eight years of elementary school.
  2. Requires no previous experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires elementary knowledge of the materials, tools, equipment and practices essential to ground and building maintenance.
  • Requires ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Requires ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Requires ability to operate simple equipment, machinery and tools.
  • May require good physical condition to perform strenuous manual labor tasks.
  • May require possession of an appropriate valid driver's license.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requies the ability to work overtime.
  • May require good physical condition to perform strenuous manual labor tasks for 6.5 hours or more.
  • May require the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • May require the ability to stand for 6-8 hours.

We are looking to fill positions in the following areas.  Applicants may apply for all by completing the appropriate section on the application below.

  • Buildings & Grounds  - Maintains clean, safe and attractive public use areas. 
  • Competitive Events  -  Data entry of all competitive event applications and interaction with applicants to these events.
  • PIO/Press Office - Working in the media tent for the Illinois State Fair; assisting department PIO officer with media related issues for the fair.
  • Grandstand Ticket Taker – Scanning tickets and guiding event goers to their seats.
  • Grandstand Backstage Runner - Assisting at each event behind the scenes; working with fair staff and entertainment to ensure needs are met. Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
  • Special Events - Assisting with all special events that are taking place on the grounds throughout the day during the entire fair.
  • Credentials- Working with the Credentials Office in support of areas such as Credentials, Camping, Golf Carts and Mega/Jumbo pass.
  • Grandstand Ticket Sales - Will provide service to fair goers for each event held in the grandstand during the Illinois State Fair.  Processes ticket orders and sells grandstand event tickets.
  • Security - This position will be responsible for securing a designated area on the grounds in an effort to assist Illinois State Police to ensure the safety of fair goers and exhibits. Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Space Rental - Measuring locations for vendor exibitor spacing, customer service, cash handling.
  • Expo Building Supervisor - Managing day to day operations in and around the building. 


The following are anticipated hire dates and application deadline dates. Applications will be scored and ranked from highest to lowest score.  Applicants will be offered employment in score order. Applicants scoring 1 or less will only be contacted if necessary to fill any vacant positions.
