Position Overview - Steamfitter

The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Steamfitter for Traveling Maintenance Team Central located out of Camp Lincoln.  This position under general supervisor of the Military Maintenance Engineer, performs duties of a journeyman steamfitter on the installation, maintenance and operation of heating and air conditioning, maintenance and repair of sanitary fixtures and sewage.  This position is subject to emergency call-up as required during non-duty hours.  The Department of Military Affairs works with the members of the Illinois Air and Army National Guard.  We welcome all interested applicants to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors and performs installation, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of all heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains hot and cold-water lines, pipes, soil pipe, traps, and appliances, including all fittings, for facilities such as water closets, lavatories, urinals, commodes, sprinklers, and showers.
  • Plans work from initial layout to final assembly by interpreting and applying building plans, blueprints, sketches, specifications and other guides and codes.
  • Initiates and submits proper material documentation for supplies/tools needed to perform facilities maintenance and repairs.
  • Instruct and supervise semi/unskilled maintenance workers when assigned to assist with plumbing and heating/air conditioning work.
  • Cuts and threads pipe, using stocks and dies, power threading machines, power saws, and pipe machines.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires completion of 4 years of high school or equivalent.
  • Requires possession of a valid CFC certification.
  • Requires experience necessary as a journeyman steamfitter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Working knowledge of tools, equipment, methods, and practices of the trade.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and any locally approved software for energy management systems.
  • Requires ability to read, interpret and work from plans and sketches.
  • Ability to maintain files and service records.

Employment Conditions

1. Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.

2. Requires statewide travel as part of a Maintenance Team within the normal workday hours.

3. Requires the ability to lift and carry 80 pounds, il e., heavy boxes, supplies, etc.; ability to move heavy furniture and equipment.

4. Requires being on feet for long periods of time; the ability to climb stairs and ladders.

5. Requires being on hands and knees for extended periods of time.

6. Requires the ability to withstand extreme temperature changes.

7. Requires exposure to a variety of chemical cleaning agents.

8. Requires a valid driver’s license in the appropriate classification as required by law.
