The selected interns will be trained on Sales & Use Tax, Business Income Taxes, Individual Income Taxes Sales and Income Tax policy and related tax software. Interns will work with and learn many different types of IDOR administrated taxes and skills relating to tax litigation and tax policy by working with department staff, taxpayers, opposing counsels, judges, businesses and local governments. The interns will develop professional oral and written communication skills and gain experience in the development of presentations for taxpayers, opposing counsels, judges, businesses and local governments. Through the internship, interns will gain knowledge of the inter-related divisions of the Legal Services Administration with a view toward qualifying for a specific position in the Agency upon the completion of academic studies.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Under immediate supervision, for a period not to exceed four (4) years, on a full- or part-time basis, while actively enrolled in law school, or in conjunction with a recognized college or university work study program, receives controlled assignments in Legal Services to receive training and experience in a technical, professional, or administrative field commensurate with their academic level/degree.
  2. In a controlled environment, receives proven mentor-style training that includes both formal classroom and introductory on-the-job training with emphasis on gaining knowledge and experience in all legal processes within IDOR.
  3. Attends and participates in a variety of meetings, both within and outside of the specific assigned area, which provide a broad overview of IDOR legal and tax processing methods, procedures, and related operations.
  4. Participates in Personal Development classes, e.g. Ethics training, Diverse workplace, sexual harassment, and various personal communication programs designed to develop personal development and communication skills.
  5. Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and active enrollment in law school.
  2. Requires no previous work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prefers ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  2. Prefers ability to establish and maintain working relationship with agency staff and the general public.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
