Position Overview: 

 

The Student Intern supports the mission and operations of the Guardianship and Advocacy Commission (GAC) by assisting with a variety of administrative, programmatic, and policy-related tasks. The intern develops professional communication skills, particularly in the area of releasing information related to client services, and gains familiarity with the agency’s programs and initiatives. Responsibilities include assisting with studies and planning activities, preparing and distributing program-related forms, handling incoming calls and visitors to ensure they are directed to appropriate staff, and maintaining accurate records and reports of daily activities. The intern may also participate in staff meetings, conduct special studies or reviews related to client files and service needs, and perform other duties as assigned to support the effective delivery of services within the Commission.

Essential Functions

  • Become familiar with the mission of the Guardianship and Advocacy Commission. Develop  communication skills regarding the release of information pertaining to client services, participate in studies and plans relating to the Guardianship and Advocacy Commission.
  • Assists Director of Policy and Training in and becomes familiar with the programs of the agency assists office staff in the preparation and disbursement of required forms related to the specific program.
  • Responsible for handling calls and visitors requesting information and/or assistance from the GAC assigning visitors or callers proper staff person so that services may be delivered.
  • Attends staff meetings and other meetings assigned by supervisor makes daily reports of his/her activities.
  • Performs or assists in performing special studies and/or reviews information relative to the maintenance of files and client needs.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • This position requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and active enrollment at a college.
  • This position requires the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • This position requires ability to establish and maintain working relationship with agency staff and the general public

Created in 1979, the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission protects the rights and promotes the welfare of persons with disabilities. A board of 11 commissioners, who serve without compensation, govern the agency. The Commission is an executive state agency created to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities. By providing legal representation, investigating complaints of rights violations, and providing state guardianship for Illinois’ population with disabilities, the Commission has given a voice to those who have previously gone unheard.
