Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated Spanish speaking individual to serve as a Switchboard Operator supporting Environmental Health Programs in the Springfield Office. The position will answer phones, maintain files, and perform general clerical functions to support Health Protection Programs and operations. Responsible for opening, sorting, date stamping, and distributing all incoming mail. The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent organizational skills and strong communication skills.

Essential Functions
- Under direct supervision, serves as the Office’s switchboard operator and receptionist.
- Responsible for opening, sorting, date stamping, and distributing all incoming mail.
- Assists Office Programs with simple clerical tasks such as preparing weekly itineraries, folding letters for mass mailings, typing labels for filing, and assisting with filing.
- Assists with preparing the Telephone Usage Certification forms including collecting forms and verifying staff have completed them correctly.
- Speaks and writes Spanish as necessary to address inquiries from Spanish-speaking individuals.
- Attends and completes mandatory knowledge-based and practical training required by the Office of Health Protection standard operating procedure and program requirements.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
- Requires the ability to speak and write Spanish at a colloquial skill level.
*Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
