- Upon graduation, an intern must meet the minimum qualification for the target title of the internship. For this internship the target title is MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS ANALYST TRAINEE- and the minimum qualifications for the title are Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college, supplemented by a master's degree in business or public administration, with coursework in areas such as economic theory, accounting and finance, organizational theory, and operations research (for example, courses such as analytical decision processes, quantitative analysis, operations control, linear and nonlinear programming, computer simulation and model building, economics of decision-making). If the minimum qualifications for the target title are not met at the time of graduation, the internship will end without being offered placement into the targeted Trainee title.
Benfits: The Paid Leave for All Workers Act (PLAWA) allows workers to earn up to 40 hours of paid leave from work each year. Position Statement
- The mission of the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) is to protect and promote the wages, welfare, working conditions, and safety of Illinois workers by enforcing State labor and employment laws, providing compliance assistance to employers, and increasing public awareness of workplace protections. As a Data Intern, you’ll work directly with the agency’s Chief Data Officer on high-impact initiatives. Potential projects include building real-time data dashboards to visualize caseloads, assisting in the implementation of a new case management system, and measuring the impact of process-improvement initiatives. You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with department stakeholders to develop solutions to their unique data problems, and to propose projects that you believe will advance IDOL’s priorities. Your work will be critical in helping the department effectively utilize our data for the public good!
Essential Functions
- Completes controlled work assignments involving practical application of data collection and analysis, including research, analysis and report preparation.
- Assists professional staff on complex projects regarding data collection and analysis, which may include: Development and implementation of new department-wide case management system, Development of automated data dashboards to provide summaries of department activity and progress, Transitioning paper forms and registration processes to online processes.
- Participates in on-the-job training which provides the incumbent with a practical knowledge of work methods, procedures and related operations, with emphasis on data collection and analysis with a goal of 1) educating the public, 2) improving enforcement outcomes and 3) managing internal performance.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, conferences and training seminars focused on data and analysis.
- Participates in orientation and training which provide a general knowledge of programs, service philosophies and objectives of the Department of Labor.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and active enrollment at a college.
- Requires no previous work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, or a similar field.
- Completed coursework in GIS, Microsoft BI, Tableau, and/or other programming languages.
Conditions of Employment
- This position is considered sedentary work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(a)). Sedentary work involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and requires occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
