Position Overview
ISP Technical Advisors serve as subject matter experts on various areas of the law impacting the Department's operations and programs. We are looking for a hard-working and self-motivated experienced attorney who is interested in tackling a variety of legal issues to join our legal team. Job Responsibilities
- Serves as a Technical Advisor in the Illinois State P:olice Legal Office; serving as a subject matter expert on legal issues impacting the release of information as it pertains to the operations of the Department, which includes but need not be limited to privacy, freedom of information, open meetings, and subpoenas.
- Performs legal research and provides legal interpretation on an assigned area of legal expertise, which includes but not limited to releasing information outside of the Department to ensure operational compliance with existing law.
- Advises and meets with the Chief Legal Counsel and Senior Command to provide for the evaluation of proposed operational or workflow process changes.
- Participates in meetings with the Chief Legal Counsel and Senior Command to provide legal analysis on proposed rules and legislation.
- Provides legal advice on proposed guidelines for the training of new and existing staff.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in business or public administration.
- Requires the possession of a license to practice law in Illinois.
- Requires two years in the practice of law.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Prefers three years of experience with legal research and writing.
- Prefers two years of experience drafting, researching or analyzing legislation.
- Prefers two years of experience with the administrative rulemaking process in Illinois.
- Prefers two years of experience with applying the principals of FOIA or the OMA within state government.
- Prefers one year of experience in the practice of privacy as either a licensed attorney or certified privacy professional.
- Prefers one year of experience with civil or criminal procedure in Illinois and federal courts.
- Prefers one year of experience with preparing and/or delivering training on statutory or regulatory provisions as they pertain to the operations of a work unit.
- Prefers experience with analyzing operational efficiencies to include work flow analysis.
Conditions of Employment
Requires the ability to successfully pass a background check.
