Position Overview
The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire a self-motivated, knowledgeable, ambitious, detail-oriented Unit Supervisor to supervise a Disability Determination Adjudication Section for the Bureau of Disability Determination Services (BDDS) in Springfield. This position provides ongoing training and direction to staff; conducts case reviews on the more complex cases to ensure compliance with SSA guidelines; analyzes periodic statistical data and provides feedback to staff on performance; establishes working relationships with SSA offices, medical providers and other professionals to enhance customer service; applies SSA and Bureau of Disability Determination Services (DDS) policies and procedures; maintains a monthly consultative examination budget; provides on-the-job training to new staff; adjudicates assigned backlog of disability claims as well as claims assigned to subordinate staff; and serves as a section-wide trainer to train medical and adjudicative staff to implement computer system upgrades.
Essential Functions

Serves as Unit Supervisor.

Manages a monthly consultative examination budget by allocating monetary amounts to staff to ensure uniform service to staff.

Conducts case reviews on the more complex cases to verify that cases processed in the unit comply with Social Security Administration (SSA) guidelines.

Serves as a backup manager to other Adjudicative Units in the Adjudication Services Division.

Performs special studies to identify trends and training needs of the agency.

Adjudicates disability claims under the guidelines of Title II and XVI of the Social Security Act.

Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college.
- Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a health or human services organization.
Specialized Skills
- Of the three (3) years’ experience, requires two (2) years' experience in all levels of social security disability adjudication and redetermination, including experience with Title II and Title XVI of the Social Security Act, which could be gained as a Disability Claims Adjudicator II or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of experience in all levels of social security disability adjudication and redetermination, including experience with Title II and Title XVI of the Social Security Act, which could be gained as a Disability Claims Adjudicator II or equivalent.
- Four (4) years of professional experience utilizing medical terminology, body systems, medical tests and reports and the effects of various types of impairments.
- Four (4) years of professional experience conducting case reviews on complex cases and working with rules, policies, and procedures of federal agencies such as Social Security Administration (SSA).
- Three (3) years of professional experience developing and maintaining cooperative professional working relationships.
- Two (2) years of professional experience meeting deadlines with the ability to prioritize and a strong attention to detail.
- Two (2) years of professional experience providing technical training and assistance to staff to ensure the accurate and timely benefits in service delivery.
- One (1) year of experience interacting with and communicating in oral and written form with internal and external stakeholders ensuring detailed and critical analysis of work performed.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to pass a federal employment background check. Individuals selected for positions with the Illinois Disability Determination Service (DDS) must go through a complete federal background investigation suitability determination by the Social Security Administration. Those individuals meeting the state requirements for employment must first complete the federal background investigation prior to their start date. This is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to the Social Security Disability data, records and systems. Further details will be provided during the pre-employment background check process.
Work Hours: Mon-Fri, 8am-4:30pm; 1 hour unpaid lunch.
