This position serves in a regional capacity. Persons serving in this role are required to assume residency in one of the counties identified under the Conditions of Employment section which includes LaSalle County or the following counties: Jo Davies, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Carroll, Ogle, Whiteside, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Putnam, Marshal, Stark, Bureau, Henry, Mercer, or Rock Island and will be required to work from their home location as a base of daily operational headquarters to service their designated worksites.
Position Overview
The Department of Agriculture is seeking to hire a Veterinary Consumer Safety Officer in LaSalle County. This position ensures the handling, processing and disposal of food animals in slaughter establishments are safe and up to state standards. This successfully will also assist in the training of the Meat and Poultry Inspectors. Job Responsibilities
- Verifies the design and proper functioning of a plant’s food safety and process control systems by utilizing veterinary training in microbiology, food science, biology chemistry and/or agriculture to assess the scientific adequacy of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), microbiological verification sampling protocols, or other protection assessments.
- Assists the Bureau Chief in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating Bureau policies, programs and procedures for slaughter and processing of meat and poultry.
- Develops and maintains ongoing communication and advisory work between supervisors, industry personnel, public health and the USDA.
- Performs announced and unannounced visits of slaughter establishments to ensure humane handling and slaughtering of animals.
- Collects information pertaining to product recalls, consumer complaints, or other public health concerns.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DMV) or a Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) from an accredited school or college of veterinary medicine.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers experience applying the knowledge of practical psychology and human relations necessary to effectively communicate with persons of all educational levels.
- Prefers experience establishing and furthering acceptable working relationships with veterinary practitioners, regulatory personnel, county personnel, plant personnel, herd owners, and members of related industrie
Conditions of Employment
- Requires possession of valid driver's license.
- Requires ability to travel statewide in the performance of duty.
- Requires the ability to safely navigate potentially hazardous environments such as those with slippery conditions, operating moving carts and forklifts, and/or of meat cutting and sawing equipment.
- Requires ability to work in adverse conditions such as long hours, extreme temperatures and high noise levels.
- Must reside in LaSalle County or the following counties: Jo Davies, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Carroll, Ogle, Whiteside, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Putnam, Marshal, Stark, Bureau, Henry, Mercer, or Rock Island.
